IBM and services education

This article in the NY Times (free registration required) should be required reading for most SIS faculty. The article is a Q&A with Irving Wladawsky-Berger, IBM VP for technical strategy and innovation. In it, he discusses efforts by IBM to partner with universities for what seems to be very much in the traditional bailiwick of the IS programs.

Interesting. While we always need to be careful of just how much we allow ourselves to be attached to a corporate agenda, we certainly need to have a strong service component (it is what distinguishes us, after all, as a professional school). What we need to assess is also what other entities, other than for-profit corporations, need and want; so we need to understand the needs and desires of academe, government, and cultural organizations.
